Postpartum Hemorrhage

Following a scheduled C-section, Natalie Rizzo suffered severe complications. In this personal essay, she shares her experience with postpartum hemorrhage and bilateral pulmonary embolism. “Hemorrhages occur in approximately 1% to 6% of births according to the National Institutes of Health,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Dr. Purdie added that excessive blood loss is more common during a C-section since the uterus has to be cut open to deliver the baby.
