Baby bottle sterilizers help simplify the cleaning process and ensure thorough sanitation. Many also have a drying function, which is important as leftover water can be a breeding ground for bacteria, according to Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. Sterilizing is critical up until a baby reaches three months of age and their immune systems are more developed. After that, washing with hot, soapy water is usually enough, explained Dr. Ferry. For healthy babies outside of the newborn phase, “exposure to very small amounts of virus and bacteria is actually important for development of healthy immune systems,” said Dr. Ferry.
