Pregnancy often brings about common mental health challenges, such as stress and anxiety. These issues can stem from various sources, including concerns about impending parenthood, personal health, the baby’s well-being, body image and the anticipated changes in their lives after welcoming a new child. “The most common mental health diagnosis that I see in patients is anxiety and depression,” said Suzanne Bovone, M.D., an OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Dr. Bovone screens all her pregnant patients for perinatal mood disorders. “For mental health in pregnancy, I use the Edinburgh Screen, but one can also use a PHQ9 screening tool,” she said.
