How to Encourage Fetal Movement

One of the greatest joys of pregnancy is feeling baby move in your belly. To promote fetal movement in the second and third trimesters, try eating something. “Having a snack is a good idea, especially if you have gestational diabetes,” said Ellen Smead, certified nurse-midwife at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “It really doesn’t have to be sweet. A snack with complex carbs and a protein like nuts can do the trick.” Touching your belly is another tactic. “Gently nudging your belly can also encourage movement,” said Smead. “Sometimes, you can easily feel a foot pushing out, and giving it a nudge causes a reflex response.”
