The ability to receive prenatal and postnatal monitoring virtually is helping to improve access to maternity care in Georgia. The new virtual OB program at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, provides moms with a blood pressure cuff, a fetal heart rate monitor and a scale. Vitals are recorded by mom at home and then sent to their physician through an app. “Most patients have 15 minutes on my schedule and that includes getting them ready to see me, so, in this situation, they still have 15 minutes but they’re really spending most of that time just talking to me,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., OBGYN and medical director. The program also eases the burden of travel time for appointments. “I have a patient that I’m not sure I would have seen her more than three times if she hadn’t been in this program,” said Dr. Purdie. “But at least she was checking her blood pressure at home, she was listening to her baby at home and I could sit and talk with her.”
