Managing Your Teen’s Menstrual Period

Navigating the first few years of your teen’s menstrual period can be challenging. Obstetrician-gynecologists (OBGYNs) can be a helpful resource to start with as their bodies are changing. “I go over genital anatomy with my patients all the time,” said Suzanne Bovone, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “I’ll have them hold a mirror so they can see their body as we go over proper anatomical terms.” Once they’re more comfortable, discussing different period products might not feel as overwhelming. “Teens can use pads, tampons, cups and discs from the first period. It’s about being aware of one’s anatomy,” said Dr. Bovone.
