There are many period product options for teens nowadays, including menstrual cups. "Teens can safely use menstrual cups from their first period if they want," said Suzanne Bovone, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Many teens find menstrual cups more comfortable than other period products, explained Dr. Bovone. “Many report less cramping as well as less odor,” she said. If menstrual flow is light, Dr. Bovone suggests using a lubricant. “You may need some water or water-based lubricant to ease insertion if menstrual flow is very light so as not to cause irritation to the vaginal walls.”
