Micropreemie Defies All Odds

Kane Nash was born at 23 weeks weighing just 15 ounces, less than a pound. He was an unexpected blessing as mom Amber was told she wouldn’t be able to have children after having ovarian cancer at a young age. Following a six month stay in the neonatal intensive care unit at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Kane has defied all odds and will soon celebrate a very special first birthday. "They gave me a gift I never thought I'd have,” said Amber. “They were able to keep me hopeful, to keep me positive, to keep me with realistic expectations and I owe them so much." Lisa McGill-Vargas, M.D., a neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Eastern Washington, cared for Kane together with her team. "To see him smiling and giggling and interacting, because it's not just about survival, it's about thriving,” said Dr. McGill-Vargas. “And to see a little boy like Kane, after all he's been through, after all his family has been through, doing so well, it makes it all worth it."
