There are six pregnancy hormones that prep your body for childbirth, which are also responsible for some of the unpleasant symptoms you may experience. One is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). hCG alerts your body that you are pregnant and causes morning sickness. It’s one of the first symptoms that you might notice, said Melanie Lagomichos, D.O., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas, and one of the main reasons for those initial suspicions that you’re pregnant. “The good news is that the nausea that follows is a sign of a healthy pregnancy,” said Dr. Lagomichos. “But in the moment, I think any pregnant woman dealing with nausea and vomiting will tell you that they’d happily skip these symptoms.”
