Pregnancy-Safe Sleep Aids

Getting quality sleep during pregnancy can be a challenge. While sleep aids provide much-needed relief, it’s important to know what options are safe. Jill Purdie, M.D., an OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, advised that sleep aids that have been studied in pregnancy and are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration are more commonly recommended by health care providers for sleeping issues during pregnancy. Pregnant people can safely take doxylamine, such as Unisom, and diphenhydramine, such as Benadryl, both of which showed no increased risk of congenital abnormalities.
