Colostrum, the early breast milk produced during pregnancy, is full of health benefits for your baby. It can be expressed and collected late in pregnancy, though you should only try it with your health care provider's sign-off, according to Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. The benefits of prenatal milk expression are not widely known, as there isn’t adequate research on the practice. "Many of the studies done have been observational or reporting what mothers have done and what their outcomes were," said Dr. Ferry. "The limited data we have makes it difficult to support a specific recommendation," she explained.
