A couple from Fort Myers, Florida watched as their 3-month-old baby was taken for surgery at a local hospital. The baby, born prematurely, had a defect that could have affected his brain development. While in the NICU, doctors discovered an unexpected condition involving a hard spot on his head. The couple was nervous but grateful that local surgeons could provide a unique treatment for their baby. “There are growth centers in the skull that allow for rapid expansion of the brain during early years,” said David Lobb, M.D., a craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgeon at Pediatrix® Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialists. “And if those close early, then you can get a misshapen head and some impacts on brain development.”
