Second Flu Peak Underway

A second spike in flu cases is underway. So far, children under five have been the hardest hit group. "There are typically multiple flu strains circulating each respiratory season, so there can be multiple peaks in one season," said Zachary Hoy, M.D., a board-certified pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Centennial Hospitalist of Nashville. "The best way to protect against the flu is getting the season flu vaccine,” said Dr. Hoy. "It has multiple vaccine strains and is based on prediction models of most likely strains and can prevent getting the flu or decrease the likelihood of severe disease or death from the flu," he explained.
