Insomnia is a common symptom of pregnancy. According to Amber Chambers, CNM, certified nurse-midwife at Melbourne Maternal-Fetal Medicine, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, causes of insomnia in pregnancy include hormonal fluctuations, physical discomfort, having to get up and pee all the time and stress. If you’re experiencing insomnia, speak with your provider about how you can get some relief. “My first-line treatments are generally lifestyle modifications or supplements before resorting to medications,” said Chambers. She often recommends prenatal yoga, exercise, prenatal acupuncture, massage, cognitive behavioral therapy and magnesium supplements (with your provider’s approval). If natural alternatives aren’t effective, sleep aids are also an option, and your provider can share what is safe to take.
