Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids can cause a host of uncomfortable symptoms. “Fullness in the pelvic area, painful periods (dysmenorrhea), heavy periods, which could cause anemia, urinary urgency (feeling like you have to void often), painful intercourse (dyspareunia) and pressure in the rectal area are frequent [symptoms] when you have fibroids,” said Rebecca Keith, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at OB Hospitalists of Kentucky, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. However, they’re not always on women’s radars as a potential cause. “Some women may think they just have a urinary tract infection or constipation,” said Dr. Keith. “Others may think they have ovarian cysts, and some women may even feel like they are pregnant due to the symptoms,” she added.
