The Dangers of RSV

Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson East recently shared her family's experience with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to raise awareness. Infants under one year of age are especially at risk as well as children with underlying conditions. "RSV can cause a disease called bronchiolitis in infants, which involves swelling of lower airways—bronchioles—and wheezing," said Zachary Hoy, M.D., a board-certified pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Hospitalist of Nashville. "Sometimes, this can lead to trouble breathing and a need for oxygen,” explained Dr. Hoy. “RSV can also cause apnea or longer pauses in breathing in young infants less than three months of age. This can require special monitoring in the hospital or emergency room."
