The summer sleep schedule often consists of late nights followed by late mornings. Before kids head back to school, it’s helpful to slowly transition to normal bedtimes and waketimes. “If you’re having a stressful couple of days, or you’re not sleeping well leading up to those first couple days, that can really start things off on the wrong foot,” said Daniel Gustkey, M.D., pediatric neurologist at Pediatrix® Specialty Care of Austin. Dr. Gustkey also stressed the importance of winding down before bedtime, so that children are relaxed and calm. “Playing video games or watching TikTok on your phone in bed can be negative towards falling asleep,” said Dr. Gustkey. “Because your brain thinks that being in bed is for something else, besides just sleep.”
