A gentle C-section offers a more personal experience with some of the post-delivery benefits of a vaginal birth. “A gentle C-section is a surgical delivery that aims to make the experience more natural and intimate for the family,” said Jill Hechtman, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at OB Hospitalists of Florida, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. A mom may feel disconnected from her baby after a traditional C-section where she does not have the option for immediate skin-to-skin contact, a view of the entire birth and the ability to cut the cord. “The goal is to keep mom and baby together as [soon] as possible,” said Dr. Hechtman. If you’re anticipating having a C-section and are interested in a gentle C-section, it’s best to include it in your birth plan. “Talk with your ob-gyn about your birth plan and let them know that this is something you’d like to try,” advised Dr. Hechtman. “Express to your delivery team your goals for how you envision your delivery.”
