Flow Space

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop on a woman’s ovary. They’re typically benign and resolve on their own without causing any symptoms. However, larger, painful cysts may require regular monitoring and treatment. “Ovarian cysts are more concerning if they have solid components or are solid throughout,” said Tina Hendrick, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at OB Hospitalists of Kentucky, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group.. “As long as they are simple fluid-filled (like a water balloon), they are typically benign.” While ovarian cysts are not preventable, Dr. Hendrick noted that regular ultrasounds can help monitor their stability and ensure they’re not growing. “Women always have to be their own advocates,” she said. “If pain is experienced, push for an ultrasound to rule out any cysts, especially if the pain is severe or lasts over several weeks.”
