Children’s Hospitals in Austin and Across Texas Battle Respiratory Viruses

Pediatric hospitals throughout Texas are overflowing with patients who have various respiratory viruses. St. David’s Children’s Hospital in Austin is no exception. “We are just full of kids with respiratory illnesses,” said Renee Higgerson, M.D., pediatric intensivist at Pediatrix® Critical Care of Texas and medical director of inpatient pediatrics and pediatric critical care at St. David’s. Dr. Higgerson said staff members sometimes struggle to find enough beds for the children who need to be admitted. “When we’re looking for ICU beds, we’re calling all the hospitals in the region,” she said. “They’re all full.”
