Bedtime snacks for expectant moms with gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes can be harmful to both pregnant moms and their developing babies. “Women who have gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing preeclampsia during pregnancy and requiring a cesarean delivery due to larger than average infants,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “As many as 70% of women who have diabetes during pregnancy may develop diabetes later in their life.” Avoiding sugary foods at night and going for healthier options will help stave off complications. “The body processes sugar quickly, and eating sugary items just before bed may cause the blood sugar to drop in the middle of the night,” said Dr. Purdie, who recommends several alternative bedtime snacks that are healthy and fulfilling.
