Breakthrough bleeding is any type of bleeding between periods. While worrisome, it’s common and doesn’t typically indicate an underlying health issue. “For a majority of people that have one episode of spotting, it’s OK to wait and see if it happens again,” said Suzanne Bovone, M.D., an OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. According to Dr. Bovone, people tend to randomly bleed when they first get their period because of irregular menstrual cycles. Once they reach their 20s, they begin to show breakthrough bleeding for various reasons. Breakthrough bleeding is still possible even when someone is perimenopausal. “People will have their periods spaced out, which can cause spotting in between, and it is part of that natural cycle of perimenopause leading into menopause,” said Dr. Bovone.
