Physicians weighed in when a mom was chastised for feeding her 6-month-old baby a rare steak in a video she posted to TikTok. Her daughter’s pediatrician recommended steak (with an internal temperature of 145 °F) and several other nutrient-rich foods to start introducing. “All babies need is breast milk when they start out, and right around five to six months they’re going to start to need extra [nutrition] because the breast milk is usually not keeping up with their growth,” said Anastasia Gentles, M.D., medical director and pediatrician at Pediatrix Urgent Care of Houston. “That’s the reason why we start introducing other foods.” If parents find they need to introduce food to keep their babies in good health, Dr. Gentles recommends puréed vegetables and fully cooked puréed meats after 6 months.
