Though highly unlikely, it is in fact possible to get pregnant while you’re already pregnant. The technical term for this is called “superfetation.” "Superfetation in humans is possible, but it is extremely rare," said Sasha Andrews, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® of Colorado, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Typically, a woman doesn’t ovulate once she’s conceived but in very rare cases, ovulation continues and can lead to superfetation. "Superfetation occurs when after the start of a pregnancy, a second egg (or ovum) is fertilized and implants, resulting in two babies with different gestational ages," said Dr. Andrews.
