St. Joseph’s Health Hospital is celebrating 50 years of providing neonatal intensive care for the Syracuse, N.Y. community. “First and foremost, everybody loves babies,” said Dr. Jonathan Chai, Pediatrix-affiliated neonatologist and practice medical director. “The incredibly rewarding part of what we do is that as sick as some of these babies may be initially, the great, great majority of them end up having a full recovery and doing great. It’s so rewarding to see that, to have taken care of them and get them through tough times and then see them go home with happy parents.” Tiffany and Rich Gerlock are just one example of that. Their son, Chase, spent three months in the NICU. “They go into that business for a reason—they really care about kids and families,” said mom Tiffany. “I feel grateful, forever grateful, for them for what they did to make him healthy and get him to where he is today.”
