Delayed Drowning in Kids

While drowning prevention is likely on every parent and caregivers’ radar, especially during the summer months, it’s important to also know the signs of dry drowning, or delayed drowning. “The key here is that inflammation and subsequent damage may evolve over a period of time — hours or possibly days — and what you may see is either delayed respiratory symptoms and/or slowly evolving respiratory symptoms,” said Todd Zimmerman, M.D., pediatric emergency medicine physician and medical director at Pediatrix® Emergency Medicine of Nevada. Symptoms can be hard to recognize but if there are any concerns, it’s always best to have your child evaluated. “Any time there is a non-fatal drowning incident, one should have a very low threshold to seek medical attention,” said Dr. Zimmerman.
