Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a severe infection of the reproductive organs. Sometimes, an ultrasound is used to diagnose PID when initial exams are inconclusive. According to Jill Purdie, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, an ultrasound will only reveal PID if it has progressed to the point where there are abscesses, adhesions or scarring in the fallopian tubes. Dr. Purdie explained that with a transvaginal ultrasound, your healthcare professional may be able to see abnormalities in the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and overall pelvic area that may be related to PID. A CT scan may be used to check for abscesses or fluid buildup in the pelvis. “Though, typically, a provider will issue an ultrasound over a CT scan if looking for PID specifically,” said Dr. Purdie.
