The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) calls for pediatricians to add heart-health screenings during children’s wellness visits. According to the AAP, “2,000 people under the age of 25 die every year from a sudden cardiac event.” Jason Garnreiter, M.D., pediatric cardiologist and electrophysiologist at Rocky Mountain Pediatric Cardiology in Denver, Colorado, hopes that making heart screenings part of the well-child visits will unveil some potentially deadly heart conditions. “Any child could be at risk for these conditions, and limiting our screening to only those who are coming in for sports participation is going to miss those kids,” said Dr. Garnreiter.
