Moms transitioning from breastfeeding are naturally curious about how long it will take for their milk to dry up. “Breast milk generally stops being produced 3 to 10 days after cessation of breastfeeding,” said Jordan Rush, M.D., OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. However, “some women will have continued scant leakage for weeks to months.” To help speed up the milk-drying process, Dr. Rush recommends cold cabbage leaves on the breast, Benadryl, estrogen-based birth control, ice packs and nipple stimulation and Ace bandaging.
