Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can be especially dangerous for newborns. According to Zachary Hoy, M.D., a board-certified pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Centennial Hospitalist of Nashville, it puts your baby at risk of developing pneumonia or bronchiolitis, a lower respiratory infection that causes inflammation in the small airways of the lungs. This can cause labored, faster breathing and fever, all of which contributes to dehydration. “They don’t have as much [air] reserve [as older children],” explained Dr. Hoy, “so they have more difficulty maintaining more forceful breathing and faster breathing, and they can tire out faster when sick.” Thus, an ER visit may be warranted for baby to receive oxygen or IV fluids.
