Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Morning sickness is one of the most common pregnancy symptoms. For most, nausea and vomiting typically ease after week 14 but if symptoms continue beyond that, you may be suffering from a severe version of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). “HG is diagnosed when a patient becomes dehydrated and/or loses more than five percent of pre-pregnancy body weight,” said Suzy Lipinski, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrix® of Colorado, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “In severe cases, patients may need to be seen in the office or even admitted to the hospital for IV fluids and IV anti-nausea medications, said Dr. Lipinski.” While this can be worrisome, Dr. Lipinski said that babies are usually very well protected in the womb and will continue to get all the calories they need, even if you’re losing weight. “The best thing that you can do is talk to your doctor about your symptoms.”
