Is Bottle Propping Safe?

Using a household item like a pillow to keep a bottle positioned in your baby’s mouth poses significant health risks. According to Robert Quillin, M.D., board-certified pediatrician and medical director at Pediatrix® Newborn Services of Texas, there are no safe ways to prop baby’s bottle. In addition to safety concerns, bottle propping also means you’re missing out on the parent-child interaction that comes with feeding baby, said Dr. Quillin. Other safety tips for bottle-feeding include monitoring and checking the temperature of the milk. Dr. Quillin advised not to microwave milk. “The contents of the bottle should be warmed slowly to the temperature that’s appropriate for the infant to feed, which is 98.6 degrees,” he said.
