When baby Flora was born with breathing issues and unexpectedly required neonatal care, the region’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. was a blessing in disguise for parents Matt and Fernanda Caldwell. “Our Level III NICU offers advanced medical treatment with a comprehensive team, including neonatal nurses, pediatric pharmacists and board-certified neonatologists available 24/7,” said Dr. Johny Tryzmel, Pediatrix-affiliated neonatologist who cared for Flora. “We also offer family-centered care, where parents are included in discussions with the medical team. We do have private rooms, and parents are encouraged to stay with their infants, even overnight.” Reflecting on the importance of having this type of care available if needed, Matt said “We had known it was important to have a great NICU in a hospital, but until we went through the experience, we didn’t realize how paramount that would turn out to be.”
