Managing Heavy Bleeding Due to Uterine Fibroids

Heavy periods caused by uterine fibroids can be difficult to manage, but there are solutions to consider, including lifestyle changes, medications, noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures and surgery. According to Amy Wetter, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, hormonal prescriptions are a popular option as they help reduce estrogen and progesterone, which are responsible for stimulating fibroid growth. Ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are also an accessible and low-cost option. “When taken [a] day before [your period starts], and then for the first few days of your menses, these will significantly lessen bleeding and cramps,” said Dr. Wetter. Other prescriptions, like antifibrinolytic medications, can be beneficial if you have blood clots. “This [type of] medicine can stop blood clots from breaking down.”
