Metallic taste during pregnancy

In addition to nausea and exhaustion some women experience during pregnancy, a change of taste, called dysgeusia, is another symptom that affects 93 percent of pregnant women. A metallic taste in the mouth is one of the more common descriptions given by women with dysgeusia. But what causes it? “A rapid increase in estrogen at the beginning of pregnancy is thought to be the [primary] cause,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., OB/GYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Purdie suggests drinking citrus juices or lemonade or changing to a different prenatal vitamin to lessen the metallic taste.
