‘Miracle’ Preemie Graduates from NICU

Baby Temari was born at 22 weeks, and those first few minutes of life are the most difficult. "You're asking very underdeveloped lungs to do the work of getting enough oxygen to support the body," said Monica Shah, M.D., neonatologist at Pediatrix® Austin’s First Steps in Texas, said. "These lungs are really struggling with a lot of inflammatory changes." After a tumultuous 11-month stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, Temari headed home and is progressing well. While she is still on a ventilator, her settings have been lowered. It takes time for babies who were born with premature lungs to grow, and that lung growth will happen at a slower pace that a typical baby, said Dr. Shah.
