New heart screening guidelines for children

Heart screenings are now recommended for all children and young adults ages 12 to 25 during their regular annual checkups. This no longer applies to only those who participate in sports. Anyone can have a heart defect or conditions that, if left undetected, can be dangerous. “These conditions are very rare and can cause very sudden cases of cardiac arrest that may not be caused by exercise or any other factors; often genetic and run in the family,” said Matthew Park, M.D., pediatric cardiologist at NorthWest Congenital Heart Care, part of the Mednax® family.
