While newborn hiccups are typically not a sign of an underlying medical issue, they can be upsetting for new parents. “Hiccups can cause distress for parents and interrupt the sleep of a newborn, and so knowing how to try and prevent them or reduce them can be helpful for everyone involved in the care,” said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. one way to get rid of baby hiccups is to slow down feeds. “To decrease the likelihood of hiccups developing, if you notice your baby often hiccuping during feeding, have your baby take breaks with feedings,” said Dr. Ferry. “Sometimes just slowing down feedings can improve the development of hiccups.”
