Pandemic Learning Loss and Children’s Development

A new study suggest that younger children may face fewer developmental challenges from the pandemic than initially feared. While research findings overall are mixed, concerns about learning loss due to the pandemic are valid, especially in early childhood when foundational skills in literacy, numeracy and social-emotional learning are developed, according to Fae Dopwell, M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician at Pediatrix® Developmental Medicine of Dallas. Despite possible setbacks, there is hope. Dr. Dopwell noted that neuroplasticity suggests children, especially those ages 5 and under, are highly adaptable.
