When it comes to pregnancy cravings, pickles are typically the first thing that comes to mind. Interestingly, there are some biological factors that contribute to this common craving, including hormonal changes. “There are several hormone changes in pregnancy that could produce those cravings we’ve all heard about,” said Rebecca Keith, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at OB Hospitalists of Kentucky, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. These include changes in hormones like progesterone and estrogen, which “increase in the first trimester and remain high into the second and third trimesters,” said Dr. Keith. This can majorly affect tastebuds. “Since foods may taste differently to pregnant women, they may choose some foods they would normally avoid,” she explained.
