Early on in your pregnancy, you’ll likely experience cravings for certain types of food – from pickles to pizza. Interestingly, no one really knows what causes them. “We aren't sure exactly what causes pregnancy cravings, but we do have two main theories," said Sarah Jordan, M.D., OBGYN and medical director at OB Hospitalists of Texas, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. The first theory, explained Dr. Jordan, is that pregnancy hormones heighten your sense of smell and taste, increasing both food cravings and aversions. "Another theory is that cravings are the body's way of addressing nutritional deficiency—meaning you crave food with the nutrients that your body needs," she added.
