Twins Henry and Hudson Whorton were born prematurely at 24 weeks at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. Considered micropreemies, they weighed just under two pounds. After spending more than 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the twins are now thriving a year later. “Every organ system here is premature and we have to take great care because they are really fragile,” said Maria Navarro, M.D., neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Topeka. “With advances in medical care, babies who are born preterm are more likely to survive than ever before,” explained Dr. Navarro. Mom Alexis reflected on the twins’ NICU journey. “We’re so thankful and grateful,” she said. “The care that they got was wonderful and we’re able to all be at home together.”
