Protein in urine during pregnancy

Verywell Family

Having some protein in urine during pregnancy is normal, but too much of an increase can sometimes be cause for concern. “For the most part, having a small amount of protein in early pregnancy (before 20 weeks of pregnancy) is considered either normal or may be indicative of a minor infection in your urine,” said Amy Wetter, M.D., OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix Medical Group. “If I have a patient with a small amount of protein in their urine and that patient is otherwise healthy with no chronic medical problems, my first step is to reassure them, encourage them to drink plenty of water if dehydration is suspected, and then also send a urine culture to evaluate further,” said Dr. Wetter. If it’s determined that other conditions are causing the increase, further evaluation and treatment is recommended.
