Raising Awareness about Shaken Baby Syndrome

Lady of Lourdes Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana, recently participated in the Purple Cry program via DontShake.org to help build awareness about Shaken Baby Syndrome. Affecting more than 3,000 children in the United States each year, about 80 percent suffer permanent brain damage from the violent shaking that causes the brain to move back and forth in the skull. “A baby’s brain is very fragile,” said Dr. Amy Zeringue, Pediatrix-affiliated neonatologist and NICU medical director. “This back-and-forth movement can lead to swelling or bleeding in the brain and a lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting in brain damage.”
