Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is surging around the country and putting a strain on children’s hospitals. “Nobody has enough beds,” said Renee Higgerson, M.D., pediatric intensivist and medical director at Pediatrix® Critical Care of Texas and St. David's Children's Hospital. “We're taking care of patients in every possible location we can in the hospital.” Area hospitals are coming together to offer free beds to patients when they become available, though nursing and staffing shortages continue to be a challenge. “We're opening some sections of the adult hospital, creating pediatric beds,” Dr. Higgerson said. “But what's limiting us is the availability of nurses. We just need more nurses.”
