Spotting before the anticipated start of your menstrual cycle can catch you off guard. There are several reasons this can happen, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). According to Suzy Lipinski, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrix® of Colorado, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, irregular bleeding between your periods may be a sign of PCOS, a common hormone imbalance that causes anovulation, which happens when an egg (ovum) does not release from your ovary during your menstrual cycle. “It is also associated with other hormone imbalance symptoms such as acne, facial hair growth and pre-diabetic or diabetic issues,” explained Dr. Lipinski. With PCOS, some women may also go months without their period or have very frequent or heavy bleeding before or during their period, she added.
