Identical triplets are extremely rare, but they can happen. While there’s nothing that increases someone’s chances of having identical triplets, assisted reproductive technology (ART) is the biggest factor that increases the chances of having multiples in general, according to Amber Samuel, M.D., a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. ART includes fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization and ovulation medications. Because of advances in reproductive medicine, in vitro is becoming a less common reason for having multiples, said Dr. Samuel; typically, only one embryo is transferred now, which decreases the risk of having multiples overall.
