As the name suggests, the cry it out sleeping training method involves putting baby to bed while they’re still awake and letting them cry until they fall asleep without any help. “Parents should implement sleep training when developmentally appropriate for a child to sleep through the night,” said Fadiyla Dopwell, M.D., developmental-behavioral pediatrician at Pediatrix® Developmental Medicine of Dallas. This is usually around four to six months of age. While effective, the cry it out method can be difficult to endure and determining how long to let baby cry varies. “If a parent asks me, I say it’s what they can tolerate,” said Dr. Dopwell. “I don’t think most parents can tolerate constant crying for 20 minutes, but it varies by individual.”
