Borax has gone viral as women tout its use as a vaginal cleanser. No one should put Borax inside their vagina, advised Jill Purdie, M.D., an OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group in Atlanta. While the powdered detergent is toxic, Dr. Purdie generally does not recommend douching with any product as it harms the “good” bacteria in the vaginal microbiome. “This actually increases the risk of infection and odor, including sexually transmitted infections if a woman is exposed,” she said. The use of Borax for douching likely came from confusing it with boric acid suppositories. “The suppositories are not something that are needed daily to maintain the vagina or ‘clean’ it,” explained Dr. Purdie. “They have to be used in a specific way and for a limited amount of time and should only be used under the direction of a physician.”
