Numerous options are available regarding female contraceptives, with the widely renowned “pill” being particularly popular. However, for individuals seeking a hormone-free alternative, the choices are limited. One of the main factors contributing to the prevalence of hormonal drugs in female contraceptives is their established effectiveness. There is little incentive for industries to develop non-hormonal alternatives due to the consistent track record of hormonal birth control being more reliable in terms of protection against pregnancy. “When you look at non-hormonal options, they are around the 80% to 89% range while your hormonal options are all going to be 95% or better,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., an OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group.
